Walking?
I have a question for everyone. What classifies officially "walking?" At what point do you mark it in the baby book as officially walking? Is it 5 steps? 7 steps? 5 steps with a couple pivot turns? Just curious as it seems like everyone can classify it differently. :) Emily has done all of the above...but I'm not quite sure it's official "walking" yet. :) Is it only considered walking if she no longer crawls but walks everywhere, all the time? Or are there just different stages going from crawling, cruising, stepping, then walking? As you can tell I'm a first time mom. :) Any comments/opinions would be appreciated! :)

Hey Shelly, Ethan started walking at 13 mo., a few steps here and there. but I always say he really started walking at 15 mo. He no longer crawled and walking was his main mode of transport. Of course you could always put the "first step" date and the "walking all the time date" in the baby book. I think thats what I did! How fun to see your girls gain their independance!
I say claim it at the first step! My daughter went back and forth for a while, but she could walk...just didn't always choose to! I REALLY have enjoyed your site...it inspires me and gives me hope...I'll be 30 weeks this Tues!!! We've even made our own website now. Check it out if you have time. AND happy birthday to your babies!!!!

Hey Shelly -
I would say walking is when they are walking steadily on their own. You know - not when you start them off between two people or they take a few steps and sit down. I definately don't think it has to be completely walking and not crawling anymore - sometimes crawling is just faster :) Congrats to little Emily either way - I'm sure her sisters will follow soon huh?
I say it's when they can get around by themselves not crawling. It may not be all the time and it may not be far, but it still counts. My daughter just walked between her daddy and I for the first days, but I still counted it. That's this first time mom's opinion.
I asked Mike about it. His opinion is that he would classify walking as Emily being able to repeat what she did, like take 5 steps again. Basically, not like when a baby rolls over as a fluke. If Emily keeps taking those steps, then that's walking. If you're not sure about it, I suggest you put in her baby book "took first steps on Oct...." then when she's exclusively walking to write "walked exclusively on Oct....you're all done crawling" That way you are covered in all areas! How exciting!!!
Oh, I totally understand your sentiment! I actually marked in Cora's baby book when she took her first steps on her own, and then again when I felt like she was actually walking. I decided to call it "walking" when she was consistently walking more than crawling. Cora didn't figure out how to stand up on her own from sitting for a while, so if she fell down, she'd crawl to something to help her stand up and then go on walking again. I called that walking in the book, though!
